A body opposed to the AngloSino Alliance in the Unification War. Soundly defeated at Serenity Valley on Hera in 2511.
Independent Faction soldiers at Serenity Valley sported very fashionable U.S. M1 steel helmets - the standard issue combat helmet of the United States from WW2 to Grenada.
Browncoats, as they are called, wore a triangular patch denoting thier rank. During the battle of Serenity Valley SGT Malcolm Reynolds gave his radio operator a brevet promotion to Lieutenant by presenting him with the rank patch of a nearby dead officer. Like most browncoat officers at Serenity Valley the radio operator was killed moments later.
